We received a wonderful call this morning from Phyllis Facey, the President of the Beverley Naturalists Club. She told us that the group was holding a thank you BBQ at 5pm on 14th November at the Apex Park in Beverley to recognise the volunteer fire fighters and local Bushfire Risk Management Planning Coordinator John Hansen who helped with with their buffer zone hazard reduction in the Club’s Brooking Street Reserve.
Phyllis told us that an event was held last Saturday but the brigade members who were there were called away to fight a fire so they never got the “recognition they deserve”.
During the conversation, Phyllis said that she had personally been a strong advocate against burning for mitigation, had fought against the establishment of a Bushfire Risk Management Planning coordinator position and held the personal view that volunteer firefighters were just “glorified arsonists”.
But wow, how experience changes people! Phyllis said that as a result of the excellent cooperation and carefully planned buffer zone and mitigation works, she now will use all her energy to sing the praises of everyone involved.
Ms Facey also nervously mentioned that it was taking her “a while to get used to all the protocol” and we explained that the AVBFB is working hard with the new Minister, Fran Logan and Commissioner Darren Klemm to make things a little less bureaucratic – which was received with a grateful sigh of relief.
Anyhow, we asked for some photos so we could publish an article about this clearly good news story and Phyllis directed her to the Beverley Naturalist Club Facebook page where we found the post below.
So well done to everyone involved, especially the Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade members from Beverley and York who Phyllis said are “just incredible” for jumping out of bed in the middle of the night (and leaving your own thank you party) to protect other people’s lives and property with no payment at all.
And thanks to Phyllis for taking the time to acknowledge the amazing work the 26,000 incredible women and men of WA’s biggest emergency service do for our community 24/7!!
