In response to a talkback caller earlier this week, radio 6PR called the Association Vice President Dave Gossage to talk about the fact that sometimes being a volunteer leaves individuals out of pocket. Dave clearly explained that volunteers don’t want to be paid, but some serious consideration does need to be given to how Western Australia’s 26,000 bush fire volunteers can be better recognised for the enormous, invaluable contribution they make to the State’s emergency preparedness, response and recovery.
In the genuinely moving interview live from the Northcliffe fireground, Vice President Gossage was asked about the value of bush fire mitigation and even though clearly exhausted, gave a balanced view of the facts regarding the pros and cons of mitigation.
Then in the true spirit of our amazing volunteers, Dave told morning presenter Gary Adshead that on behalf of the hundreds of men and women who had given up their time and safety to fight the current fires, wanted to thank the local community for its support.
