It is good to see the former career firefighter and United Firefighters Union Member Hon Martin Aldridge pursuing at least some of the issues important to WA’s largest emergency service – the Volunteer Bush Fire Service.
The seemingly intermittent Nationals Member asked the following Question Without Notice to Environment Minister Hon Stephen Dawson as the Upper House representative of the Emergency Services Minister Hon Fran Logan who answered it earlier today.
Evidently Mr Aldridge asked the question of the wrong Minister, but nevertheless it is somewhat disturbing that Minister Dawson’s generous response confirmed the Emergency Services Minister is still unaware of any “proposed arrangements regarding the expiry of the commissioner’s current term” given that we wrote this letter to the correct Minister – Premier Mark McGowan as Minister for Public Sector Management – asking for immediate action six weeks ago.
Thank goodness the AVBFB has your back and is asking the important questions.
Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the minister representing the Minister for Emergency Services:
I refer to the Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm, AFSM.
(1) When does the commissioner’s term expire?
(2) Now that the government has finalised and announced its position on structural reforms within the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, will the government provide greater certainty on the leadership of the
organisation by extending the commissioner’s tenure?
(3) Will the position of commissioner be advertised and open to application following Commissioner Klemm’s initial 18-month term?
Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises the following.
(1) The commissioner’s term expires 18 months from 19 September 2017.
(2)–(3) The Public Sector Commission is responsible for the employment of public sector chief executive officers in the senior executive service. Proposed arrangements regarding the expiry of the commissioner’s current term have not yet been communicated to the minister.
