Our hard working Lower Great Southern zone representative Rob Lynn sent the following article and photos through regarding the opening of the new Napier fire shed and extension of the King River shed in Albany. Thanks Rob, another excellent report!
Two official openings occured in the Albany region this week – the new Napier Fire Shed and the extension to the King River Shed. Both new facilities are great examples of Local Government and DFES working with Brigades to achieve great outcomes for their communities.
Napier Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade
After many years the Napier Brigade now has a new fire shed which can house all the Brigades appliances in one place. Historically fire appliances have been located on private property in brigade built sheds and with the move towards larger Heavy Fire units the original sheds are no longer adequate. The new fire shed is located adjacent to the Napier Community Hall and tennis courts creating a broad community hub.
King River Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade
The King River Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade is a very active local brigade located on the rural/urban interface 15 kilometers north east of Albany. The Brigade supports a wide and diverse local community ranging from urban, lifestyle, rural and industrial properties. It also has the South Coast Highway bisecting the district which is a significant transport corridor for grain, woodchips and tourism.
In 2017 the City of Albany, on behalf of the Brigade, made application to the Local Government Grants Scheme to extend the fire shed which incorporates ablution facilities, meeting room/operations room, communications room and kitchen facilities.
The King River Brigade were actively involved in the recent Albany Complex Fires (May 2018) and more recently (13 January 2018) the King River Bridge fire. The King River BFB has 56 registered members.
The King River Bush Fire Brigade and local community contributed significantly to the design and constructions of the extensions through donations of time, labor, materials and brigade funds.
