As you can see from the Facebook post below and this media statement published by Environment Minister Stephen Dawson yesterday, six employees of the WA State Government are on their way to the USA as part of the 180-strong combined Australian and New Zealand contingent sent to assist with fire control.
The Association had a few expressions of interest from bush fire volunteers but the timing was such that the contingent had already been locked in. We are so proud that every time this type of situation arises, we hear from our incredible women and men who not only volunteer in our backyard, but are happy to make the sacrifice to donate their time and immense skills in other countries.
Godspeed PaWS staff and thank you to the amazing Bush Fire Volunteers who offered to go as well.
The Association of Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades (AVBFB) raised the issue of considering a system that opens the door for our members to join these international missions several years ago and will do so again now that we have a more approachable Commissioner.
