Member for Wagin Terry Waldron MLA today acknowledged local fire fighters following National Red Balloon Day (NRBD), a day to honour and thank our courageous fireys.
‘Thank you Fireys’ Day was held on February 28, or the last official day of summer this year.
Mr Waldron said he was particularly grateful to local firefighters for their hard work in controlling and maintaining the extensive Boddington, Northcliffe, Waroona and other local fires recently.
“This large catastrophic fire affected the Hotham Valley region locally south of Boddington,” Mr Waldron said.
“Despite this blaze being described by fireys themselves as ‘one of the worst fires they had seen in many, many years’ no lives were lost and only one house was lost, however, I understand there were some outbuildings, fencing and pasture losses.
“The fact that the losses were comparatively minimal was due to the quick action of our outstanding local fireys, from nearby communities and those who selflessly travelled from afar to assist.”
Mr Waldron said he was aware of other summer fires in the region, which did not develop into blazes with devastating consequences, as committed local volunteer fire crews had, “snuffed them out before they could really take hold”.
“There is a lot they do behind the scenes that the public is not aware of. They never ask for recognition or accolades, although they are very deserving of acknowledgement. And most of these people are also volunteers,” he said.
“Overall, their continued commitment to ensuring that people and property are safe and lives are saved is second to none. We don’t want their efforts to go unnoticed.”
Mr Waldron encouraged people to offer their support by personally thanking their local firefighting crew by purchasing ‘Thank You Fireys’ red balloons and other merchandise online at www.nationalredballoonday.org/merchandise.html, or by joining the group on Facebook (NRBD event page).
“Fundraising will go towards the relevant state fire services, or to services which support our unsung heroes in times of hardship,” he said.
